The Castle formed a formidable barriere wall along the Massellone Creek and the road which leads from Siena to Gaiole and to Valdarno. The Castle belonged to the Mezzolombardi's until 1167 when Frederick "Read Beard" took it from the Sienese noble Guarnellotto dei Mezzolombardi as a punishment for having rebelled against the emperor, who then gave it to Ranieri de' Firidolfi Ricasoli. "Red Beard's" wishes were, however, unheeded insofar as the local hid the heroic Guarnellotto and he managed to mantain control over the Castle and Campi, as well, until the Poggibonsi Treaty when the Castle became part of the district of Florence. |
